CII Chairman Clarifies VPN Remarks, Dismisses Controversy as Typographical Error

Home - News - Breaking News Pakistan

LAHORE: In a bid to clear the air surrounding recent controversies, the Chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), Allama Raghib Naeemi, has addressed misconceptions regarding Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, he clarified that VPNs have not been declared un-Islamic or ‘haram,’ attributing the misunderstanding to a typographical error in an official statement.

The confusion stemmed from an earlier statement misinterpreted to suggest that the use of VPNs was against Islamic principles. This led the Interior Ministry to direct the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to block unregistered VPN services, reportedly disrupting several VPN platforms across the country.

Allama Raghib Naeemi clarified, “The misunderstanding arose due to a typographical error in our issued statement. The omission of the word ‘no’ led to the confusion.” He reassured the public that no member of the CII had declared VPN usage unlawful or contrary to Islamic teachings.

Highlighting the broader issue of social media misuse, the CII chairman noted, “Social media is a powerful tool for sharing ideas and opinions. However, its misuse for blasphemy, sectarianism, or extremist activities is unacceptable.” He emphasized that while violating these ethical guidelines would render certain online behaviors un-Islamic, this does not apply to the legitimate use of VPNs or other online tools.

The chairman also urged the public to practice responsible social media usage, avoiding activities that promote religious intolerance, terrorism, or hostility.

This clarification aims to put an end to the controversy, ensuring the public that the council remains committed to promoting ethical and balanced digital practices.
