Govt Promises Action Against Alleged ‘Venom’ Towards Saudi Arabia Amid PTI’s Clarification of Bushra Bibi’s Remarks
In a heated political storm, the federal government has vowed to take strict action against any negative comments targeting Saudi Arabia after controversial remarks made by former first lady Bushra Bibi. While the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has denied the accusations, tensions remain high as political rhetoric escalates.
The Controversial Statement
In a recent video, Bushra Bibi claimed that foreign powers were unhappy with her husband, PTI founder Imran Khan, for his religious gesture of walking barefoot in Madina. She further alleged that after his return, former army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa received disapproving calls, though she did not name the parties involved.
The statement created ripples within PTI circles, with concerns about its potential impact on ongoing backchannel diplomacy efforts. General Bajwa reportedly dismissed the allegations, while media outlets speculated on the fallout.
Prime Minister’s Sharp Response
Speaking at the inauguration of a flood restoration program in Taunsa, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the remarks. He emphasized Saudi Arabia’s unwavering support for Pakistan throughout history, including financial assistance during critical times.
“There can be no greater enmity against Pakistan than spewing venom against Saudi Arabia, a nation that has unconditionally supported us,” the prime minister stated. He warned that any attempt to harm Pakistan-Saudi relations would be met with severe consequences, describing such actions as an “unforgivable crime.”
Defence Minister’s Scathing Criticism
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif echoed the prime minister’s sentiments, calling Bushra Bibi’s remarks “vile and disgusting.” He accused the PTI of using baseless allegations for political survival, claiming the party was battling internal strife between Imran Khan’s family members.
“Our relationship with Saudi Arabia is historical, religious, and economic. Such irresponsible statements endanger not just political but national interests,” Asif said, highlighting the critical role of Saudi Arabia in supporting over 2.8 million Pakistani workers who send billions in remittances annually.
PTI’s Defense and Clarification
The PTI hit back, denying any negative intent in Bushra Bibi’s statement. PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram clarified that her remarks were misinterpreted and not directed at Saudi Arabia or its leadership.
“She highlighted General Bajwa’s alleged involvement in undermining a democratic government, not Saudi Arabia,” Akram explained in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan also defended his wife, stating, “Bushra Bibi’s statement was deliberately taken out of context. She didn’t mention Saudi Arabia at all. My government was toppled by conspiracies orchestrated by General Bajwa.”
PTI spokespersons further accused the government of using the controversy to distract from ongoing protests and mounting public dissent.
Call for Diplomacy and Responsibility
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar criticized the PTI for attempting to compromise Pakistan’s foreign policy for political gains. “This relationship is based on mutual respect. Implicating Saudi Arabia for petty political point-scoring is regrettable and indicative of desperation,” Dar said.
As tensions continue to rise, political analysts warn that such controversies could strain diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia, a crucial ally for Pakistan. Both sides have called for restraint, urging leaders to prioritize national interests over political rivalries.
Conclusion
The fallout from Bushra Bibi’s remarks highlights the fragility of Pakistan’s internal political landscape and the risks of involving foreign relations in domestic disputes. As the government and PTI continue to trade barbs, Saudi Arabia’s critical role in Pakistan’s stability underscores the importance of measured diplomacy and mutual respect.
