Interior Ministry Plans Strict Actions Ahead of PTI’s November 24 Protest
ISLAMABAD: As the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) prepares for its “do-or-die” protest on November 24, the Interior Ministry is ramping up security and considering stern measures to curb potential unrest. Sources revealed on Tuesday that the ministry is evaluating the cancellation of passports and identity cards of individuals involved in violent demonstrations, along with blocking their SIM cards.
The ministry has also reportedly proposed revoking academic certificates and admissions of students who participate in protests leading to violence. These measures come as part of the government’s broader strategy to address security challenges and maintain public order.
Geofencing Afghan Refugee Camps and Increased Surveillance
In preparation for the demonstration, authorities have begun geofencing Afghan refugee camps in Islamabad and other cities. Surveillance efforts have also intensified, with law enforcement agencies monitoring suspicious locations to preempt any terrorist threats. The Interior Ministry has directed security forces to remain fully prepared for any disruptions.
Heightened Security Measures in Islamabad and Rawalpindi
A significant deployment of security personnel is planned for the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The Islamabad police have requested the deployment of 9,000 additional personnel, including 5,000 from the Pakistan Rangers and 4,000 from the Frontier Corps (FC), equipped with full anti-riot gear starting November 22.
In addition, public buildings across the federal capital will be under tight security, with strict measures in place to protect vital infrastructure. The Islamabad administration has already imposed Section 144, which prohibits public gatherings, for two months to ensure law and order.
PTI’s Protest and Political Tensions
The PTI, led by its founder Imran Khan, is protesting alleged rigging in the February 8 elections, the arrests of its party workers, and the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment. The protest is the latest chapter in a prolonged political standoff between PTI and the ruling coalition, which the party accuses of coming into power fraudulently.
Imran Khan has issued a “final call” for supporters to converge in Islamabad, intensifying the political atmosphere. The PTI has held several protests in the federal capital over recent months, often clashing with law enforcement. In September, party chairman Barrister Gohar Khan and several lawmakers were arrested under the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024, following a rally in Islamabad.
Government’s Response to Escalating Protests
The Interior Ministry has made it clear that it will adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward “perpetrators of violence” and those involved in “wrongdoings.” As tensions rise, the government’s enhanced security measures aim to prevent disruptions and ensure the safety of citizens amid the looming political showdown.
